Press a hotkey and all your Explorer windows will be hidden out of sight. Or press a hotkey and all your graphics programs will be activated. Or set it so that your browsers will be automatically hidden after a certain amount of time passes. These are a few examples of what can be done with WindowTangler, a Solid Eight Studios product that’s meant to help you organize and control groups of windows.

Little time and effort will go into installing WindowTangler on a Windows PC. You just have to download and run an installer, and then follow the simple instructions presented by a setup wizard. When you’re done and you launch WindowTangler for the first time, a prompt will show up and inform you that “this fully functional version of WindowTangler is available completely free of charge.”

WindowTangler has a tabbed interface. It features the following tabs:
Visible windows – view a list of visible, active windows; select a window and hide it, hide all but the selected window, hide all windows; select a window and activate it.
Hidden windows – view a list of hidden windows, show selected window, show all but the selected window.
Window groups – specify on what windows you’d like to apply an action; view available groups, create new ones, delete old ones; hide and show a group of windows.
Hotkeys – set up hotkeys so you can easily show/hide groups of windows.
Visibility timers – the clock timer will automatically hide a group of windows at a certain time; the stopwatch timer will hide a group of windows after a certain amount of time passes.

WindowTangler puts an icon in the system tray. Double click it to bring up the tabbed interface I presented above. Right click it to access a context menu that lets you hide/show all windows, hide/show a specific window, access the visibility timers, hide/show a group of windows.

Hide a window or a group of windows from WindowTangler’s interface, from the system tray icon, or by using a hotkey.

Pros

You’ll have to complete a simple installation procedure to get WindowTangler up and running on your PC. WindowTangler has a tabbed interface that is easy to navigate. Use WindowTangler to control groups of windows; hide/show groups of windows. WindowTangler is free software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
